  • born 5-19-1925 in Nebraska
  • birth name was Malcolm Little
  • dad was Baptist minister who was struck and killed by a car
  • was into gambling, selling drugs, burgling, and hustling
  • 1946- got 10 years in prison for burglary
  • was released in 1952
  • prison changed him
  • African American civil rights leader
  • became a speaker
  • spokesman for black nationalism
  • debating skills
  • achievements: civil rights, religion, and theology


Ryan: Lance Armstrong
  • born in Texas in 1971
  • grew up poor in wealthy neighborhood
  • not good in athletics, got into trouble
  • began cycling at age 16
  • at age 18, was professional triathlete
  • won Tour de France 7 times
  • arrogant, the French considered him an “ass”
  • pushes fans, a total jerk
  • was nicknamed the Texas Bull, because of his arrogance
  • accused by French of blood doping


Vaughn: Karl Marx
  • born in Germany of Jewish parents
  • became an atheist
  • educated, went to law school, went to University of Berlin
  • had ideas of how Capitalism should replace Communism
  • got exiled from Germany and later from Paris

2/28/11INTRO: When we have a snow day our assignments get bumped ahead a day.  Class took reading quiz, then vocabulary quiz.  You will be able to choose whether to count the reading quiz or the RWR for a grade. Handed in RWRs.  Try to read for 40 minutes every day.

  • when he was 6, he and father both changed their names
  • from long line of ministers in Georgia
  • graduated high school at 15
  • admired Gandhi
  • heard about Rosa Parks- bus boycott- civil rights
  • made lots of speeches, was even arrested
  • was a peaceful protester
  • youngest man to receive Nobel Peace Prize (in 1964)
  • was assassinated in 1968

  • from wealthy family
  • very respected
  • picture on our currency
  • rebel of the American Revolution against the British
  • was commander-in-chief of colonial army
  • didn’t believe in the taxation the Brits imposed on the colonists
  • didn’t like the oppression of the Brits
  • decided not to accept the British laws imposed on them
  • boycotted British goods
