- born in Texas in 1971
- grew up poor in wealthy neighborhood
- not good in athletics, got into trouble
- began cycling at age 16
- at age 18, was professional triathlete

- arrogant, the French considered him an “ass”
- pushes fans, a total jerk
- was nicknamed the Texas Bull, because of his arrogance
