Essay Writing: Goal is to show your reader something new, a new approach or looking at something. Can bring a sheet of notes, outline to class for Thursday

Literary analysis: Argument is presented first! Come up with a good thesis statement so your argument is clear.

Classwork:
  • Dialectic Journal: Divide piece of paper into 3 parts: Question: 1st person will write answer, 2nd person will read response and then respond, 3rd person responds to both responses.
  • Question: Which character from the book the Outsiders wold you like to be or meet?

Class activity: Class divided into groups to discuss question:
  • Who are your favorite and least favorite characters in the book and why?


Favorite character/least favorite character:

Darry: top researcher, Johnny’s brother, takes care of his brother, mean to brother

Johnny: been through a lot, not mean, bad cop

Dally: acts tough, but soft inside

Soda Pop: cool name, annoying name,close to Pony, understanding, good cop

Pony Boy: he doesn’t judge people Who doesn’t he judge? Sherry.

Who does he judge? Early in chapter 3: (page 43)  It’s not just fair, they    have all the fun.....


Question: Do you need parents where one is good and one is bad?
  • Are two good cops a problem? Can’t have a story without a conflict between a good cop and bad cop. In real life do you need to have both? Yes-need discipline.
  • What does the good cop provide that the bad cop doesn’t? Could love someone but still be the bad cop.Good cop presents the caring, understanding, more visible love. Bad cop harder to do and takes more energy.
  • Who has younger siblings? Do you have to work to keep them in line? How many of you are a younger sibling? Do you feel your older siblings give you a hard time? How often?
